Giampaolo Parpinello
Poderi Parpinello
Giampaolo Parpinello has genuinely dedicated his entire life to the cultivation of indigenous grapes in Northern Sardegna. Leaving the Veneto after graduating from the oldest oenology school in Italy (Scuola Enologica di Conegliano) he packed up at age 21 and headed to the island.
His younger years were spent consulting at various producers and decades later (1990) he acquired his first 5 hectares of vines near Lake Baratz in the NW. He started his small production there and it wasn’t until years later he began farming 20 hectares (on a property that he actually purchased in the 1960s) where he could transition into a production volume suitable for export. This area, between Alghero and Sassari, would be the birthplace of Poderi Parpinello (2009), a winery and tribute to his entire family (four children and many grandchildren) who all play some role in the winery and vineyards.
With his son Paolo by his side handling business operations the duo cultivates 35 hectares of grapevines in three different locations: 7 hectares on the coast of Castelsardo, 15 hectares near the Lake of Baratz (Alghero) and 13 hectares in Janna de Mare (between Alghero and Sassari), where the winery is located. This range of landscapes in the NW of the island provides the opportunity to grow many native varieties that are well suited for the coastal mediterranean climate.
After six decades of making wine Giampaolo emphasizes an unequal amount of time in the vineyard as opposed to the cellar. Continuously evolving his relationship to the vine he’s able to tune in, adapt to each vintage and let his wines speak from the land.
